Dedicated Systems Experts, a company specialized in the verification and validation of real-time and embedded systems, announces the availability of a detailed evaluation report assessing the real-time performance and robustness of Windows CE 3.0.
The report covers in great detail topics like interrupt handling, thread and process handling, synchronization mechanisms, file systems and network stack performance. Aside from these performance tests, the report also includes various stress tests. These tests monitor CE 3.0 for memory leaks, investigate how it deals with simultaneous and nested interrupts, ascertain the maximum interrupt frequency the system can sustain, and examine if increasing system loads impair real-time performance. On top of that, the report includes a theoretical study of the system architecture, API richness and development methodology.
To apply the test suite and measure system response times, Dedicated Systems Experts uses state of the art technical equipment like PCI-bus analyzers and exercisers. The bus analyzers are perfect tools to make high-precision and accurate timing measurements in a non-intrusive manner. The exercisers on the other hand generate interrupts, and are used to simulate peripheral equipment. The exercisers are programmable, stand-alone devices allowing carefully controlled interrupt sequences to be generated, while its operation remains independent and asynchronous with the main system under test.
Last year Dedicated Systems Experts published evaluation reports for a host of other RTOS, like VxWorks, pSOSystem, QNX and various real-time extensions to Windows based systems. These reports are similar to the Windows CE 3.0 evaluation report, but do not include the stress and advanced interrupt-handling tests.
