About Dedicated Systems Experts

The senior experts.

By far the most important asset base of the company resides in the skills, expertise and reputations of DS-Experts' collaborators.
We are proud to present you with overview profiles.

Martin TIMMERMAN  PhD BS MIEEE Chief Executive Officer. Expertise: Real-time systems, fault tolerance,  methods & tools
Specific Domain Competence: Automotive, Military, Rail, Telecommunications

Martin is Founder and Chief Executive Officer of DS-Experts.
He received a Bachelors degree in Telecommunications Engineering from the Royal Military Academy (RMA), Brussels, Belgium, and was subsequently awarded a Doctorate in Applied Science from Gent State University (1982).

As a specialist in Computer Engineering, he established, in 1983, the System Development Centre for the Belgian Armed Forces.
Today, he remains consultant to the Joint Staff in areas concerning Information System Methodologies and CASE tools and he manages the ICT security centre. He has been the Belgian representative to NATO in several technical commissions and is reviewer for projects at the EC.

Martin is best known, however, for Dedicated Systems Experts.
In fact, until 1st January 2000, the company was known by the name "Real Time Consult".
The change of name directly reflects the evolution of real-time and embedded systems.

There is now a plethora of names and terminologies, leading to ambiguity & confusion (mobile v. ubiquitous v. nomadic v. fault tolerant v. real time v. deeply embedded v. smart appliance v …).

The company's core competencies can be interpreted as aiming to assist clients to remove ambiguity and confusion from their system design.
As Martin  states: "Design-out the undesirable behaviours".

In addition to general management of the company, Martin contributes his considerable knowledge of technologies, markets, and essential company attributes to the success of missions.

In his spare time, Martin loves motor biking and photo shooting.

Luc PERNEEL BSc BA MIEE Technical Director. Expertise: systems and software verification & validation methods
Specific Domain Competence: Consumer Electronics, Space, Telecommunications

Luc was awarded a Bachelors degree in Electronic Engineering from the Catholic University Leuven (KUL), Belgium, in 1990.
This is complemented with a Bachelors degree in Industrial Management, awarded also by KUL, in 1991.

As a specialist in Computer Engineering (both hardware and software), Luc is the Technical Director of Dedicated Systems Experts.

He defines the overall objectives, approach, content and cost estimations for the majority of system engineering support missions undertaken by DS-Experts.
Additionally, he is responsible for the planning and management of all third-party software development projects.

He has been a collaborator in the company for the past 12 years, and as such he has acquired a broad experience in real-time systems, both from an R&D viewpoint, as well as in the context of commercial product development projects.

Luc brings at least two major assets  to DS-Experts.
These are embodied in his extensive knowledge of:

  • processor hardware and software, and especially,
  • the complexity of interaction viewed in a systems context.
Underpinned by broad yet in-depth knowledge of all the components involved in the specification, design, test and implementation cycles of a dedicated system, Luc has applied this expertise in a variety of missions requiring test, verification and validation of complex systems.

These span the range from testing of RTOS integrity, through dynamic real-time system debuggers, to the test, verification and validation of modules designed for the International Space Station.

George DUNCAN PhD MBA BSc CEng MIEE Marketing & Planning. Expertise: Market & technology analysis, embedded systems
Specific Domain Competence: Aerospace, Automotive, Financial

George received a Bachelors degree in Electronic & Electrical Engineering from Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh, in 1978.
He was awarded a Doctorate in Electrical Engineering from Edinburgh University (1983), for his research & development work on embedded signal processing for a novel speech processing product, with Wolfson Microelectronics (WMI) Ltd., Edinburgh, Scotland.
His work with WMI also took him to the USA (Syracuse, New York).

Returning to Scotland, George went on to spend several years in R&D project management in a joint Electronics/Artificial Intelligence industrial consulting & R&D services organisation, working in telecommunications and man-machine interface R&D.
During this period, he studied at night class for the MBA degree, subsequently awarded by the Scottish Business School (Edinburgh University).

After completing his MBA in 1988, he transferred career path - and country of residence - to, respectively, sales and marketing management, and continental Europe (France), with Nixdorf Computer, then Siemens Nixdorf Information Systems (SNI).

He was responsible for strategic market analysis, new business & resource planning, to identify, assess, and negotiate the set up of internal teams and 3rd-party partnerships, so as to penetrate new markets for information systems solutions, and consulting & engineering services.

Leaving SNI in 1994, George was awarded a contract by the European Commission, in 1995, to set up and manage a trans-industry support group - known as SURGE-Transport - to promote embedded electronics & software innovation and technology transfer between Europe's automotive, aerospace and consumer electronics companies.

Within DS-Experts, George collaborates closely in marketing and strategy management. In particular, he coordinates bid management and authoring of responses to tender.
George also contributes to the success of consulting missions for technology & market watch and investment due diligence services.
